Downsizing. Just the word makes it feel like you’re losing something, right? Most of the time, things that go down are headed in a negative direction. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

What if we flip that script? Instead of downsizing, I think we need to talk about rightsizing your home for retirement. You’re not losing something, you’re fixing something. You’re trading something that no longer fits for something that fits you better.

I’m not trying to minimize something that is, for many people, a big, complex, and emotional decision. Selling a home you’ve lived in and loved, a home you may have raised your kids in, and moving somewhere new can have emotional, physical, and financial ramifications

But there are ways to both minimize the pain and maximize the benefits of rightsizing. Careful planning, meticulous organizing, and being thoughtful and strategic in the purchase of your new home can turn a potential downer into a positive, exciting new future.
