Lakes, Family-Friendly Neighborhoods and Arts

Three Great Minneapolis Neighborhoods for Every Buyer

Are you’re relocating to Minneapolis and wondering where to buy a home?

The answer to that question really depends on your lifestyle, your needs, and your budget.

Are you looking for walkability, a short commute? Maybe you want close to one of Minneapolis popular lakes.

In this blog, I introduce you three of the city’s most desirable neighborhoods. I also share one of my insider tips about why living in Minneapolis so great.

Southwest Minneapolis, it's all About the Lakes

Southwest Minneapolis is often the first choice for people relocating here for work. That’s because of its proximity to two beautiful lakes, Harriet and Bde Maka Ska – that means White Earth Lake in the Dakota language.

Minneapolis residents gather at the lake. It’s where we walk, bike, and boat. We also just hang out and enjoy a glass of wine at a lakeside restaurant or catch an outdoor concert at the Lake Harriet bandshell. Living in Southwest puts all that on your doorstep.

Southwest about more than just the lakes, though. The neighborhood has great restaurants, coffee shops, and boutique shopping, while keeping that residential feel.

Home prices here start around $500,000, although if you want a home on the lake, it’s going to cost quite a bit more.

For all of its benefits, Southwest does have a couple of downsides: there’s no light rail service here yet—but it’s coming. There can also be quite a bit of airplane noise. The neighborhood is on a major flight path for the Twin Cities International Airport.

South Minneapolis Family-Friendly Neighborhoods

My second neighborhood pick South Minneapolis. You can see we’re big on directional names here.

But don’t let that generic label fool you, South Minneapolis is made up of many small neighborhoods, each with its own personality.

If you are buying a home in South you can still expect tree-lined streets and great neighborhood parks. While mostly residential, South Minneapolis is pocketed with small commercial districts where you can dine, shop, and gather with friends.

The lakes in Southwest Minneapolis seem to get most of the attention, South Minneapolis has plenty of waterfront. There’s Mississippi River, Minnehaha Creek, and Lake Nokomis. And, of course, Minnehaha Falls, the city’s iconic waterfall.

South Minneapolis is one of the city’s most diverse areas, and one of its most accessible. Downtown is 10 minutes north by car or on the lightrail and the Airport is just a quick 15 minutes south by train or freeway.

There are a variety of housing  options here, from small starter homes and condos to stately Victorians.

Most homes sell in the $250,000-$450,000 price range.

Northeast is Artsy and Multicultural

My third pick for great neighborhoods is Northeast. Located just across the Mississippi River from downtown, Northeast is Minneapolis’ funky artistic heart. It is one of the oldest areas of the city where you can find cobblestone streets  and beautiful skyline views of downtown.

Northeast is also home to some lovely family friendly neighborhoods filled with turn-of-the century homes. The median home price here is around $300,000 making Northeast one of the city’s more affordable areas.

The Northeast Arts District includes a sprawling enclave of old industrial buildings that have been converted into artist studios and lofts. Northeast is also known for great microbreweries, friendly dive bars, and ethnic restaurants.
